Our Study Programs
There are three reasons why we need to study and practice the teachings of Buddha – to develop our wisdom, to cultivate a good heart and to maintain a peaceful state of mind.
Develop wisdom
If we do not strive to develop our wisdom we will always remain ignorant of ultimate truth – the true nature of reality. Although we wish for happiness, our ignorance leads us to engage in non-virtuous actions, which are the main cause of all our suffering.
Cultivate a good heart
If we do not cultivate a good heart, our selfish motivation destroys harmony and good relationships with others. We have no peace, and no chance to gain pure happiness. Without inner peace, outer peace is impossible.
Maintain a peaceful state of mind
If we do not maintain a peaceful state of mind we are not happy even if we have ideal conditions. On the other hand, when our mind is peaceful we are happy even if our external conditions are unpleasant.
Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso has designed special Study Programs for the systematic study and practice of Buddhism that are especially suited to the modern world: the General Program and Foundation Program.
General Program
Start here ~ General Program (GP) classes are drop-in by nature. These classes are suitable for beginners and experienced practitioners alike, and are designed to help those looking for Buddhist wisdom to help reduce stress and frustration, as well as those interested in exploring the nature of the mind, and pursuing the Buddhist path.
Classes explore the basic framework of Buddhist teachings and meditation and explain how to use Buddha’s advice in our daily lives to solve our problems. All General Program classes are based on commentaries by Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso.
A typical class consists of a guided meditation, a Dharma teaching based on the meditation topic, and a final meditation. Although classes are given as a series around one specific topic, they can also be taken individually, as each class is also contained.
Chair and cushions are provided by the Center. There is no physical exercise, yoga, or stretching involved.
General Program membership $35/month. (membership is not needed to attend class)
Foundation Program
After a taste of our General Program classes, you may wish to deepen your practice by enrolling in Foundation Program (FP). This is a structured program that enables students to gain deeper understanding and experience of Buddhist teachings.
Through regular teachings, meditation, prayers, systematic study and group discussion, the Foundation Program offers support and structure to our spiritual life. This program affords an opportunity to gain authentic experience of Dharma without interfering with our modern lifestyle. Warm friendships develop as students inspire each other, sharing insights of the spiritual path.
The success of the program lies in the manageable commitments made by the student, and in the clear structure of study. Students sign up to study a book or part of a book, agree to attend each class, learn the material, and to take a test at the conclusion of the study. Class meets once a week for two hours.
What Happens at a Class?
Prior to class, students study an assigned portion of the text, and remember the essential points. The class begins with chanted prayers and guided meditation. The teacher then reads the assigned selection from the book while giving commentary to the text. The students then divide into pairs to discuss the material. The teacher and students conclude by deciding what to meditate on in the next class and how to practice during the coming week.
How Do I Join?
Attending class on one of our open enrollment dates is the best time to join, but you may also join at other times by contacting us first at [email protected]. Students may attend three classes before deciding to formally join the Foundation Program. Enrollment comes with many benefits as all other regular classes and retreats are included with your membership. Membership is $65/month.
